It’s Summer time in Colorado and you’re looking for some unique ideas of things to do that won’t cost you too much.  Of course there is hiking and camping which is a Colorado staple and you should already be doing those things regularly.  We’ve got some other ideas of free things for you to do this summer in Denver listed below.

1. Denver Cruiser Rides

Taking over the streets every Wednesday night during the Summer starting at 7:00 you’ll find the biggest cruiser ride imaginable.  1000′s join in costume for a night of debauchery mixed with a smidgen of mayhem as the masses move from pub to pub.  For a lighter more family friendly version there are the Sunday “Ding Ding” rides.  Check the website for Denver Cruiser Rides Schedule and meeting points.

2. Go Tubing In Confluence Park

OK, I know I said Free but you may have to bust out a few bucks for a truck intertube at a gas station.  At least you can fill it up for Free at the gas station or REI just across the bridge in Confluence Park.  Jump in and take a few runs down some fun rapids.  Bring a picnic and make an afternoon of it.  The base of the rapids makes a great place to swim and cool off.  Some evenings you’ll find live music and concerts.

3. City Park Jazz

Grab a blanket, pack a picnic basket complete with 2 bottles of your favorite red wine and head to City Park this Summer.  See Denver’s own Hazel Miller, La Candela and a host of other jazz masters as they play for free all Summer long.  Check the City Park Jazz website for details: City Park Jazz Schedule

4. Walk Around IKEA

I have yet to experience this Swedish Monstrosity that has descended upon Centennial but I hear it’s all you could want and more if you’re into shopping.  Kids under 12 get a free meal at the restaurant from now until Labor Day with no other purchase required.  Free stuff!

5. Go See Some Houses

Make your way over to the Performing Arts Center in Denver to see one of the best play’s I’ve seen in a long time, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”.  The stage at the Space Theater is perfect for this intimate performance as it’s circular with the audience sitting on all sides while immersed with the performers.  It feels like you are in the office with the characters as they act out this comedic masterpiece.

It’s a story of a young ambitious window washer who gets a hold of a book that describes exactly how to make it up the ladder quickly in a big business.  Through hardwork and a bit of manipulation we follow our hero as he advances through the rungs of Corporate America while finding love on the way up.  Originally released on Broadway in 1961 it ran for 1400+ performances and earned 7 Tony Awards.  Denver’s revival of this play is equally if not more impressive that the original Broadway production.  The acting is incredible, the characters rich and most incredibly every one of the actors are disabled in some way.

If you’ve never seen a performance by Denver’s only disabled theater company Phamaly then make you way on over to the Denver Center for Performing Arts by August 7th for a night to remember.  Performances are on Friday and Saturday Evenings with a matinee on Sundays.

This year’s Banner Event, Art of the Chef, will celebrate the culinary arts through a live cooking competition featuring a select group of Denver’s best chefs. Dress in ’60s attire, view the exhibition with curator Darrin Alfred, and enjoy complimentary beverages and appetizers – all while grooving to the sounds of the ’60s. Exhibition-related prizes will be given out to the best ’60s outfits, including a limited-edition exhibition poster.
