Eurydice at the Curious Theater… Not to be Missed!!
My girlfriend and I recently went to see the play Eurydice and we were blown away (as usual) by the performance presented by the Curious Theater. If you have never been to the Curious Theater now is the time. The theater itself is a converted church located on Acoma and 11th in the heart of the Golden Triangle and Museum district. Chip Walton (no relation) has been bringing us some of the most innovative and unique theater over the past few years. We like to go to theater quite a bit and the majority of the local theaters can be hit or miss. In the case of the Curious Theater they never seem to miss! If you only make it to one play this year make it Eurydice. It will get you back into theater. The current production is running through April 18th. Go online after reading this and get tickets. It’s 2 for 1 on Thursdays so it’s only $18 for you and a date!
When I walked through the lavish church doors into a warm red velvet softly lit room I remembered how really unique this theater is. We grabbed a glass of wine at the bar and made our way to our seats. The theater is intimate and you feel like you are a part of the action rather than just a casual observer. The lights dimmed and before us, behind a silhouetted screen, was a man crying out for his daughter Eurydice. The silhouetted figure was engulfed with light and sound as he communicated to us from the underworld… and then it started to get crazy.
The story of Eurydice is a Greek Myth and has been told in various forms and expression. Basically it is the story of a young mans journey to the underworld to reclaim his bride who is killed on their wedding night. It turns out the Lord of the Underworld has taken her as his virgin bride. In this fantastical world, Euydice is reunited with her deceased father but is unable to cope or completely understand why she is there. The young groom must face various obstacles to reclaim his love, one being that he may not look upon her until they are back in the world of the living! A tough task indeed!
The set for Eurydice is over the top. On stage there are various forms of water elements and giant pools. Throughout the performance water has the power to make people forget and produces amnesia like reactions to those around and in it. Eurydice emerges in the underworld through a massive waterfall built on stage. There are the Stone people constantly walking around the stage pouring buckets of water. The stage was incredible. The costumes were incredible. The acting was incredible. At the end of the play the actress playing Eurydice actually burst out in tears.
