What Exactly is a Denver Square?
By Denver Realtor: Neil Walton
All around town you’ll see 2 story, boxy, brick homes that Denverites like to call “Denver Squares”. Well they’re not exactly from Denver… their proper name is the American Square.
The original American Square was born toward the end of the Victorian era and was initially built out of wood. Due to the massive fire in Denver in 1863 which destroyed much of Downtown, the Grodavent Brothers created an American Square plan made of Brick and it took off like wildfire. Nowadays you’ll find what is now refered to as “Denver Squares” littered all over Capitol Hill, Cheesman, Congress and City Park.
People were tired of the extravagant Victorian era home and yearned for something more simple and livable. They broke it down to the very basics and simply made a cube with a roof on it.
You’ll notice on the typical floor plan below that there are 4 main rooms on the main floor and 4 equal sized bedrooms on the 2nd floor.

Other Features Include:
- A Covered Front Porch
- Decorative Dormer
- Pyramid Roof aka “Hipped”
- Overhanging eaves for Watershed
- Leaded & Decorative Glass Windows
